All of life has a purpose for being. If you have had any kind of course study in Biology, you will know this is true. And if this is a true statement, why do so many people waste so many years not knowing what is their purpose? Or why do so many avoid looking deeper within to discover if they even have meaning for living?
Life without purpose means we have no purpose for our existence, and that in itself is a very sad, almost hopeless existence. We were not created to live like that. Perhaps if you feel your life has no real meaning, no real purpose, I can say with all truthfulness, you are wrong! You are not an exception to the eternal rule that all of life has a purpose for being. While you may be scoffing, or non-believing at this point, I ask for you to indulge me for a while longer.
I don’t know what your background might look like, and I don’t know the causes of your lack of belief, but I do know that whatever your homelife might have been, whatever contributing factors may be to your lack of value about your significance, there is always a reason for HOPE. Whether you may not see it or believe it right now, your life does have great value and meaning.
You have been created with purpose and meaning. God created you for a very specific reason. He clearly states this in The Bible: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 (New International Version). And again, The Bible states, “But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations.” Psalms 33:11 (New International Version).
Perhaps you don’t even believe in God or know Him, but I tell you truthfully, He does exist, and He did create you specifically. He knows all of His creation; He is the Creator of all things. He is Yahweh, El Shaddai, Lord of Lords, and King of Kings. If you feel inclined to disagree, proclaim that He is non-existent, at least be curious enough to discover this absolute truth. He is TRUTH. Just bear with me a little longer.
I can certainly understand non-belief or even an incorrect belief about God. I was raised in a Southern Baptist Church that taught only a vengeful God. The preacher taught nothing but hell, fire, and brimstone from his pulpit and nothing about the love of Jesus Christ. I remember being so afraid that any moment I was going to be sent straight to hell. That was pretty scary stuff for a little child of six years old. I was indoctrinated incorrectly and along with that mis-information, I was raised in a very dysfunctional home. All of these factors contributed to my running away from God for many years. The point is that I know home life, other people who influence your way of thinking and acting, and other belief systems can and do impact what you believe about God or drive you completely away from Him. BUT He has other plans for you, and while you may run, or avoid ever looking inward to examine your inner life, He still watches over you and continues to woo you to Himself. He certainly did with me, and I’m so thankful He did. I floundered for years, suffered through many heartaches, trials and painful situations not ever knowing my purpose or even why I was alive. When I finally came to the end of myself, I had nowhere to look but UP, and that is where He met me, saved me, redeemed me, and set my feet on a brand, new path with purpose and meaning. Jesus loved me so much, gave me a brand-new life and will certainly do that for anyone willing to come.
Without purpose and meaning life will continue to be empty. You might have some good times for a while, and maybe a few happy moments, but they will fade quickly to the emptiness that always remains until you come to the realization that without God, life just doesn’t have much meaning at all. He is the one who created you with meaning in mind in the first place! “The counsel of the Lord stands forever, The plans of His heart to all generations.” Psalms 33:11 (New International Version).
My hope for you is that you have a teachable spirit, and my challenge to you is to find the courage to look inward, be curious enough to search your heart, and even to pick up a Bible and start reading (I suggest the Book of John and then Romans) just to see for yourself if maybe I am speaking truth.
