Christian Guide

If you are a brand new, born-again believer in Jesus Christ, I welcome you into the family!  You have taken the most important step in your life and are now on a new path.  Scripture is clear that we are to be continuously growing in our Christian walk.  Romans 8:29-30 states, “For those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that he may be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.” (NIV).  The Bible also commands, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 4: 18 NIV).  God has a magnificent plan for your life, so He expects His children to always be growing in the faith and knowledge of Him, so He can equip you to succeed in the specific plan designed just for you.  Therefore, if you are not growing, you are hindering the wonderful future He has for you

Spiritual growth is nothing to fear, but rather something to embrace as a new believer.  Most new Christians are usually hungry for more knowledge about the One to Whom they have given their lives.  This journey is not only fascinating, but also a never-ending process to embrace.  This does not mean it will be without pain, trials, heartaches, and suffering; we do live in a fallen world.  But it does mean God will be with you through it all, and He will always provide answers.  He promises all His children this. In Roman 13:5, He states, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (NIV).  Other scriptures where this same promise can be found are Deuteronomy 31:8, 1 Chronicles 28:20, 1 Kings 8:57, Hebrews 13:5, and all throughout the Bible.   You can take God at His Word, for scripture says, “God is not human, that He should lie, not a human being, that He should change His mind. Does He not speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?” (Numbers 23: 19, NIV).  Therefore, while the Christian walk may be difficult at times, the Lord will always be in you and with you to guide, protect, provide all you need.

Your part in this journey is crucial to the fulfillment of the plan He has for you.  However, you are not expected to just figure it out on your own.  There are some major things you will need to do to remain steady and ready for God to do His part.  I have listed some initial steps below that will aid you as a new believer and follower of Jesus Christ:

  1. The first step is to find a Bible teaching Church to attend every week. Attending a Bible believing church is crucial.  It’s imperative that you have a minister who preaches/teaches the Truth, God’s Word.
  2. Thae second very important step is to get a I suggest the New International Red-Letter Version NIV; however, some other excellent choices are the New Living Translation (again, Red Letter, NIV), or the English Standard Version (Red letter, ESV), or the New King James Red-letter version NKJ. The Red-Letter versions will help you make the distinction between the words of Jesus from the words of His apostles or other people.  This will help you understand the Bible a little better.
  3. Read your Bible without fail. You will not be able to know the Lord, what He is like, how He works with His children, how He views you and the world, unless you spend time reading His Word.  You may not understand a lot of scripture at first, but the more you spend reading and studying His Word, the more the Holy Spirit will interpret, help you understand what the scripture is really saying.
  4. Take notes while reading and write in your own words what you think certain passages mean. And it’s perfectly fine to write in you   When you are writing your thoughts or questions, you are allowing the Word to speak to you.  It will also help you remember passages you would like to discuss in the small group environment or with your Mentor.  Spiritual growth depends on you spending time reading the Word.
  5. Spend time in prayer. God wants to hear from you.  He listens to you and knows your heart.  This certainly helps your relationship with the Lord.
  6. Involve yourself in a small group within the Church you have decided to attend. The Bible states, “. . . not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:25).  The word “assembling” refers to meeting with others who are like-minded for encouragement in your new life with Christ.  It also provides the opportunity to meet other believers and form new friendships, as well as a great learning environment to help in your spiritual journey.
  7. Develop a close friendship with someone who is a Christian. Having someone close to you, someone who you can trust and share your thoughts with is also an important element.  God made us for relationships with other believers.
  8. Spend time with a Mentor to help you grow in your spiritual walk, to receive encouragement, to help you find answers to the questions you might have, or to work through a problem you may be experiencing.  God certainly does not want His children to feel they are alone.  He has promised to never leave you or forsake you once you become his child.

Happy New Year!
